Printer Longevity and Quality: A Comparison on inktanks vs Xerox C320

When buying a printer, people want something that lasts a long time and prints well. This research looks at three different printers: the Epson EcoTank ET-4810, Epson EcoTank ET-4850, and Xerox C320. By comparing their features, we can see which printer is the best choice for someone who wants a reliable and high-quality machine.

Printer Durability and Lifespan
One important part of choosing a printer is estimating how long it will work well before needing to be serviced (if it can be serviced). The maximum monthly duty cycle shows how much a printer can handle before wearing out. The duty cycle is the number of pages printed on the device. This number of pages is often referred to the page count of the device. Think of page counts like miles on a car, both are common industry standards of measurement. The Xerox C320 can print close to 80,000 pages per month if necessary, which is much more than the Epson printers can…provided that their print heads and ink tanks don’t sit idle increasing the rate in which they breakdown. This means that Xerox is built to handle heavier workloads over time.

Another important factor is the imaging unit lifespan. The Epson printers do not have a separate imaging unit because they use inkjet technology, but their printheads are estimated to last 60,000 pages. The Xerox C320 imaging unit lasts for 125,000 pages, which means fewer part replacements and longer printer life.

Print Quality Differences
The Epson printers use liquid ink, which can sometimes smudge or dry out if not used often. The Xerox C320, however, is a laser printer that uses toner powder instead of ink. This makes the prints sharper, smudge-resistant, and more reliable over time.

Cost Over Time
Printers also need refills, whether it is ink for Epson or toner for Xerox. While Epson’s ink tanks can print thousands of pages before refilling, the Xerox C320 has high-yield toner cartridges that can last up to 15,000 pages (black) and 9,000 pages (color). This means the Xerox printer needs fewer refills over time, making it more convenient for frequent users.

Warranty and Maintenance
Printers break down over time, so having a good warranty is important. The Epson EcoTank printers come with a 1-year warranty (extendable to 2 years), but the Xerox C320 offers an extended warranty of up to 5 years, which provides better long-term protection, support, and repair possibilities.

Conclusion
After looking at these details, the Xerox C320 appears to be the best choice for someone who needs a printer that will last a long time and handle large amounts of printing. The C320 has a higher duty cycle, a longer imaging unit lifespan, better print quality, and a longer warranty than the Epson printers. While Epson’s ink system may be good for light home use, Xerox is the better option for anyone who prints often and wants a more durable machine.

Sales Pitch:

Key Security Differences Between Xerox B310, HP M406dn, and Canon LBP226dw

Brief: After creating and then evaluating a list of the 38 different security attributes between these three prints, I found the 5 biggest security differences that I think people should consider when shopping for a printer that they will use to print checks on.
Here is the graph I made regarding the results:

Now let’s get into the details of each Security Feature into their respective details to how they rank on this chart.

Fail Secure – Xerox Leads
 – Xerox B310:Yes
– If the system fails or is tampered with, the printer locks down instead of continuing in an insecure state.
 – HP M406dn & Canon LBP226dw:No
– These printers do not have a fail-secure mechanism, meaning if they experience an issue, they could and might continue operating in an unsafe manner.

📌 Why this matters: A printer should never operate in an unknown or compromised state. Xerox ensures that if something goes wrong, it stops rather than allowing a security risk.

Auto Deletes Printed Jobs Xerox & Canon Safer
 – Xerox B310 & Canon LBP226dw:Yes
– These printers immediately delete print jobs after printing.
 – HP M406dn:No
– This printer can store print jobs, which increases the risk of data leaks with unauthorized access.

📌 Why it matters: If a printer can keep copies of print jobs, sensitive data could be accessed later by hackers. Deleting jobs immediately is the industry’s most secure best practice during operation.

Self-Healing BIOS – HP Installed
 – HP M406dn:Yes

– Has a self-healing BIOS, meaning if the BIOS is altered or corrupted, it automatically restores itself from a saved file.
 – Xerox B310 & Canon LBP226dw:No
– These printers do not have an automatic BIOS recovery system, they will just secure themselves by failing to turn on.

📌 Why it matters: If malware targets the BIOS, HP can attempt to recover itself, while Xerox and Canon would not even turn on.

No HDD (Safer Data Handling) – Xerox & Canon Safer
 – Xerox B310 & Canon LBP226dw:Yes

– No hard drive means no data can be stored, reducing the risk of possible data theft.
 – HP M406dn:No
– This printer can have a HDD, requiring HP encryption software running to properly encrypt and manage the data.

📌 Why it matters: A hard drive in a printer means that if an attacker gains access, they could retrieve stored data. Xerox and Canon avoid this risk altogether by only allowing for RAM to be installed on their devices.

Smart Card Authentication – HP Supports
 – HP M406dn:Yes

– Supports smart card authentication, which adds another potential attack vector.
 – Xerox B310 & Canon LBP226dw:No
– No extra entry points through smart cards.

📌 Why it matters: While smart cards can add features, they also introduce a new way for attackers to gain access. Fewer entry points = better security.

Conclusion
Findings:

What matters most is for you to understand your specific required application and the locations potential environment.
When in doubt, go with the best when it comes to security.

It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to things you are going to print, right?

Here’s the one liners I think that fit well with describing these top 5 security features while noting a difference between the evaluated models. The other 33 attributes are extremely comparable to one another and don’t pose any large differentiating factors.

Xerox B310
is the best choice for security-first environments due to Fail Secure, auto-deleting print jobs, and no HDD risk.
HP M406dn
offers a self-healing BIOS but is less secure overall due to stored jobs and HDD use.
Canon LBP226dw
is similar to Xerox but lacks Fail Secure, making it a weaker option than Xerox.

Sales Pitch:

Hi there!
Thanks for reading all the way down here.
So I did this research to figure out what the most secure printer would be for printing checks. I need to make sure the product that I’m ‘pitching’ is going to hit a ‘home run’ for any type of organization that might be trying to print checks up to and including National Banks & SMB Businesses. If the baseball analogy struck with you and you are ready to talk about getting some Xerox B310’s for your organization as check printers, then please reach out to me.
